Wildflower Farms sells a grass seed called Eco Lawn. This grass seed is fast to germinate, but slow growing. Instead of mowing once a week, you can mow once a month or skip mowing all together.
Eco Lawn is a fescue that only grows nine inches tall then falls over and looks quite nice. This new type of grass is drought tolerant, grows in sun or shade, and does not require fertilizer or pesticides.

I ordered Eco Lawn grass seed from Wildflower Farms in Canada. It took about 1 week to arrive. Just google Wildflower Farms or eco lawn.
