Making better choices can save you a substantial amount of money on groceries. Here are a few tips for providing your family with healthy food without going broke.
Do not shop when you are hungry. You will be less tempted by high price, high calorie, and low nutrition foods if you are not starving.
Plan a menu, make a list, and be organized. Americans throw away a lot of unused groceries when produce goes bad and dates expire. Stick to your list and only buy items that are on the menu. Look in the back for the produce that will not expire as soon.
Buying in bulk will often save you money, but not always. If you are not a math wizard who can quickly calculate which quantity is the better deal, bring a calculator. Sometimes the smaller quantity is a better deal, especially if they are having a sale.
Buy locally grown produce that is in season and not cut up for you. When they cut the lettuce or the fruit into small pieces you are charged for the service and the produce does not keep as long. Produce that is locally grown is fresher and you do not have to pay the shipping cost.
Coupons can save you money. Coupons are often given away in the store, if you do not receive them in the mail or a newspaper. You will need to organize your coupons and make sure that you are not buying things you don't really need, just because you have a coupon.
Buying store brands can often save you money. The same companies that make the name brands package many of the store brands. The expense of advertising makes the name brands cost more.
