Dragonflies are beneficial insects that eat mosquitoes and flies. Adult dragonflies do not sting humans. California native plants attract dragonflies. There are not many mosquitoes in dry Southern California. However, pools that are not maintained can attract mosquitoes. Mosquitoes transmit diseases such as West Nile Virus. There have been several cases of West Nile Virus reported in California. We were happy to see this pretty dragonfly in in our garden.
