Yoga

Yoga is a 5000 year-old spiritual practice that has become a popular form of exercise. While practicing yoga, individuals flow through a series of postures called asanas that relax, connect and strengthen the mind and body. Some asanas mimic the actions of animals such as dogs and cats. Yoga is practiced barefoot on sticky mats to prevent slipping. Postures can be modified to meet the specific needs of individuals. Props such as blankets, straps and chairs are used in some classes.

Different types of yoga classes meet the needs of unique individuals. Prenatal yoga, power yoga, restorative yoga, weight loss yoga, and partner yoga are some of the classes that are offered at yoga studios and health clubs. Classes often start with meditation to quiet the mind. After relaxing the mind and body, asanas are practiced that build strength and increase flexibility. At the end of a yoga class, yogis lie on their backs in a pose called savasana, to once again quiet the mind and body.

Yoga Etiquette

Have you been putting off attending a yoga class, because you do not know what to expect? Knowing basic yoga etiquette will increase your comfort level and help you to enjoy your first yoga class.

Arrive Early – Arriving early will give you the opportunity to find a good spot in the room. People who arrive late disrupt the class and miss the warm up exercises. Arriving early will decrease your stress level, allow for a proper warm up, and decrease your chance of injury.

Quiet – Turn off your cell phone, keep your voice soft, and enter the room quietly. The atmosphere of a yoga class is usually calm and quiet. Do not disturb your classmates.

Cleanliness – Come to class clean and do not wear fragrances. You will be barefoot during yoga class. Clean and manicured feet will help you feel comfortable. Your mat should also be clean and odor free.

Boundaries – Do not step on the mats of other students. Respect the personal space of your classmates for the sake of safety, hygiene, and common courtesy.

Appropriate Attire – Wear comfortable clothing that will cover you if you bend over and go upside down.
