Coyotes have been living in the waterways of Southern California for many years. They keep the rat population under control. Coyotes will also eat garbage, pet food, and other small animals besides rats.
Coyotes may be seen during the day or at night. You can protect your small pets by keeping them on a leash and close by. If you have small dogs, walking with a group of dog walkers is safer than walking alone.
Coyotes visit neighborhoods when they are attracted by food. Pets need to be supervised and properly housed. Covering trash and keeping pet food inside will help keep coyotes out of neighborhoods.
Never feed or approach a coyote. Feeding or cornering coyotes can make them aggressive.
