Removing Paint From Old Hinges

Our old cabinets and hinges were covered in layers of paint. We wanted to remove the layers of paint from the hinges without damaging them or using toxic chemicals. We used an old pan to boil the hinges in hot water and baking soda. After cooling the hinges, most of the paint peeled right off.

There was a little bit of paint left on some of the hinges, so we boiled the hinges in water and baking soda again. The rest of the paint peeled off. We used a little olive oil to make the hinges shiny.

The old pan was disgusting, toxic, and full of old paint. We threw the pan away.

After sanding and painting the cabinets, we were able to reuse our old hinges. They are well made and look antique. We were able to make our kitchen look great without spending a lot of money.
